In Madagascar, one of the major challenges faced in teaching foreign languages, particularly English, is the lack of adequate materials, large class sizes, and insufficient teacher training.

English teacher Faniry had the privilege of attending a training session organized by the US Embassy in Antananarivo last month. The training was centered around the utilization of American English (AE) online resources consisting of a wealth of manuals, video-based teacher guides, and various other materials that teachers can use to enhance their teaching methodologies.

The training focused on utilizing American English resources to address the significant challenges faced in teaching foreign languages.

-The American English (AE) website has the potential to be a game-changer for teachers who know how to use it, as it offers a vast array of resources such as manuals and video-based teacher guides that can be leveraged to elevate teaching practices, explains Faniry.

As digital competency among teachers in Madagascar is not yet widespread, this training aimed to empower Faniry and her fellow teacher-students to become trainers themselves upon returning to their respective localities.

Faniry applied to participate in the training on behalf of Voantsinapy School, as both an English teacher and assisting headmaster Noro in training teachers from other schools.

With a master's degree in pedagogy and didactics in English, Faniry has played a pivotal role in briefing the teachers at Voantsinapy School on innovative pedagogical approaches over the years.

–  My primary goal is to share what I've learned here with the foreign language teachers at Voa. I'm particularly excited about utilizing what I've learned to enhance the upcoming foreign language lab experience for our students, especially when combining it with the language-learning software that will be installed on all our new computers, she sais.

The new approaches heavily rely on visual aids to engage students, making language learning a more interactive and captivating experience. Faniry feels inspired and motivated to design innovative language lab activities that will greatly benefit her students and improve their language skills.

Faniry's passion for education runs deep as she is not only the daughter of the esteemed headmaster of the school, Noro, but also the granddaughter of the school's founder, Razafy. Her dedication to advancing teaching methodologies has had a profound impact on both teachers and students alike.
